Seasons Residents Share Wisdom Through Their Writing

Seasons Storytellers Blog Header

Writing is more than just a means of communication; it is a powerful tool to inspire and inform those around us. The purpose of words is endless, from being able to express, explore, explain, and entertain. Writing also yields numerous intellectual, physiological, and emotional benefits for individuals of all ages, including improved memory function, enhanced memory recall, and boosting feelings of happiness. It can be a simple yet effective way to make each day more meaningful.

Seasons Retirement Communities has curated a program called Seasons Storytellers, which provides a creative outlet for its residents’ voices’ to be heard on various topics and showcase their significant talent. This platform allows them to share their authentic ideas and insights, including generational advice while fostering friendship-building and a sense of purpose. Inspired by International Writers’ Day on March 3, Seasons is reflecting on the special role of their storytellers, who constantly provide their homes with inspiration, guidance, and enjoyment.

Here are some poignant life lessons shared by Seasons residents:

Get a good night’s sleep – give your brain a chance to unwind and regenerate. Overnight, your body has lost fluid, so the first thing to do in the morning is to drink a glass of water to replace it. In the morning, do 10-15 minutes of light exercise. During sleep, minerals like calcium settle in our joints. Over time, these minerals harden and restrict the movement in our hips, knees, neck, shoulders, and especially our spine. Movement flushes lymph through these areas and helps clear the minerals. This will pay off as we get into our 50s! Take a vitamin D supplement, especially in winter when we spend most of our time indoors.

When you’re young, live below your means. Save as much of your income as you can and invest in dividend-paying companies. Reinvest the dividends to keep them growing; they increase as the companies prosper, providing a helpful income when you retire.

– John, Seasons Amherstburg

Set goals at a young age and go to school. Even mistakes can teach you something. Get summer jobs and make some money. Do not rely on your parents when you can do it for yourself. Do not pamper your children, but give them respect and praise for their accomplishments. Help them understand that nothing comes for free in this world.

– Bill, Seasons Amherstburg

You must love yourself and be happy with what you are doing now and in the future. The attitude you have will take you far in your job, with friends, and also your relationships as you travel along the highway of life.

– Betty, Seasons Clarington

Believe in yourself, get a good education, and do not let anyone steer you in the wrong direction. You know what you want; the opportunities are there. Tomorrow belongs to you!

– Horst, Seasons Clarington

Below is a beautifully written poem titled ‘Change’:

AS I STOOD THERE BLANKLY STARING AT THIS WONDER OF NATURE,

BREATHLESS BUT EXHILARATED,

AS THE POUNDING WAVES PUSHED THE WATER CLOSER TO THE BREAKWALL.

I THOUGHT HOW HELPLESS WE ARE IN THIS SITUATION WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER.

SUDDENLY, A FEELING OF SADNESS OVERPOWERED ME.

THEN I REALIZED AS LIFE CHANGES BY BIRTHS, MARRIAGES, DIVORCES & DEATHS,

WE CONTINUOUSLY MOVE ON PUSHING & STRUGGLING FOR SURVIVAL.

THIS GREAT LAKE NEVER MOVES.

ALWAYS BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL, BUT MOODY.

CALM & SERENE WHEN HAPPY.

ROUGH & STORMY WHEN SAD OR ANGRY,

SOMEWHAT LIKE PEOPLE.

WE BOTH GO ON, BUT ONLY ONE OF US CAN MOVE.

– Linda, Seasons Welland
