April is Stress Awareness Month. It offers an opportunity to reflect, understand, and better manage our stress. In today’s world, it’s easy to feel stressed and anxious. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, the stress levels of Canadians have doubled since the start of the pandemic.
Fortunately, they continue by saying that most Canadians struggling with their mental health because of the pandemic are experiencing a normal stress response to the current situation, and mental health resources can help them cope.
Meanwhile, here are some simple ways to relieve stress at home:
According to the Mayo Clinic, physical activity boosts the production of your brain’s happiness hormones called endorphins. Exercise can also help protect your body from the harmful effects of stress, including those on your cardiovascular, digestive and immune systems. It can even help you sleep better and feel more self-confident, which can improve your mood.
Seasons has partnered with StrongerU Senior Fitness to provide residents with exceptional fitness experiences while meeting the physical activity guidelines for older adults. Series include cardio, strength, stretch, and circuit training.
Herbal remedies and other supplements have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety. Some of the most common ones, for example, are lemon balm, Omega-3, green tea, valerian root, and more. Before starting a new health or fitness routine, please consult with your doctor for personalized medical advice.
Aromatherapy is the use of scents to affect the mood. Adding calming scents to your living space, such as lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood, can make you feel more at ease. If you live in a communal setting like a retirement residence, you could consider using a diffuser, adding scents to a bath or applying them topically.
There’s truth in saying laughter is the best medicine. Laughter can trigger physical and emotional changes within your body. It can strengthen your immune system, improve mood, decrease pain and relieve stress. It even burns calories! If you feel like a laugh, throw on your favourite comedy or call a friend or loved one who makes you smile.
Seasons team members have been working hard throughout the pandemic to ensure our residents remain connected and engaged. Several Seasons communities offer access to computer labs and shared devices to keep in touch. Staff also have coordinated calls with volunteers, pen pal programs between residents, and video calls to loved ones.
Pets have been proven to reduce stress, especially cats and dogs. They provide social support, improve mood, lower blood pressure, encourage exercise and give a great sense of purpose. All Seasons Retirement Communities locations are proud to be pet-friendly.
Many Seasons communities offer access to Animal-Assisted Therapy or pet-visiting programs, which have produced similar health benefits. These activities also encourage social interaction, communication, and a shared sense of community in group settings.*
